American Snuff Co. employees recently visited The Arc Mid-South’s Learning, Education, Training Skills class to present a $2,000 donation and learn firsthand how the money will help benefit individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The LETS program tutors students in reading, math, science, social studies, GED and job preparation, and basic life skills (money management, health and nutrition, sex education, etc.) – all important information that will help higher-functioning individuals with disabilities find and keep jobs.

Robin came to The Arc Mid-South after suffering a massive stroke in 2007 and being declared brain dead. “The Arc helped me rebuild the skills that I had forgotten,” she told the visitors. “Now I’m planning to attend the University of Memphis.”

Joseph was shot in the head, “but God saved me. I want to get my GED and then work,” he said. After spending 10 years at another local nonprofit agency without making any progress, Lashonda began attending the LETS class -- which led her to getting a job at the FedEx Hub in 2016.

“We don’t have anyone in here whining about their disabilities,” Executive Director Carlene Leaper said as she pointed to a sign on the classroom wall that said, “The only limits in this life are the ones you make.”

Leaper presented the American Snuff employees with a Community Impact Award in honor of their contribution.

The Enterprise Holdings Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Enterprise Holdings, which, through its independent regional subsidiaries, operates the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands.

The Arc Mid-South’s Life, Education, Training Skills Program  tutors adult students with disabilities in reading, math, GED preparation and basic life skills – all important information that will help higher-functioning individuals find and keep jobs. In fiscal 2016, the agency provided 10,004 hours of vocational and basic skills training to 170 clients.

May 2, 2017 --- The Arc Mid-South received a $2,500 grant from the MAXIMUS Foundation. “The Arc Mid-South and its staff embody the values that the MAXIMUS Foundation strives to achieve through its grant-making program – promoting personal growth and self-sufficiency through improved health, augmented child and family development and community development,” said John Boyer, MAXIMUS Foundation chairman. “It is an honor to present this grant to such a deserving organization, and I thank The Arc Mid-South for its commitment to enriching  the lives of those it serves.”
