“THE VALUABLE LESSON LEARNED”
CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND JOB PLACEMENT PROGRAM
Jenna A. came to The Arc Mid-South in the beginning of 2010 with an attainable goal in sight for her future. She wanted to find a job in the mailroom of an IT company so that she wouldn't interact with many people in the midst of her daily routine. Jenna liked to be alone and spent very little time with friends in her spare time. She was attending a local community college, studying to be a computer software specialist. A lot of her day was spent using computers, and figuring out complex diagnostics on computer applications.
When Jenna joined the Career Development and Job Placement Program, she learned the value of social interaction. Jenna decided that she wanted to try part-time work that gave her the ability to relax within her day and work on her social skills at the same time. After a few months of work readiness training, she joined the staff at Genghis Grill as a line bar hostess. In this position, Jenna was encouraged to step outside of her naturally shy demeanor and interact with customers.
The Arc Mid-South motivated Jenna to explore employment in a field so different from her sheltered life, and also encouraged her to join The Arc Angels Choir. The choir gives Jenna an opportunity to interact with peers, travel with the team, and express herself musically. Currently Jenna is still working and singing in the choir, with the support of The Arc Mid-South.
