Students at Work for Volunteer Mid-South Project

Students in the Career Development /Job Placement program at The Arc Mid-South recently had the opportunity to get valuable hands on experience and job training. Thanks to a collaborative project between Volunteer Mid-South and CN Railroad, the students assembled "build your own emergency preparedness" kits to be given to students in Title 1 programs in area schools.  Included in the bag s are a calendar with disaster tips, a card with disaster numbers and information, and an activity book for kids provided by FEMA that focuses on responding to disasters in a fun format.

Often low income families are the least prepared for a disaster.  The goal of this project is to provide these reusable shopping bags printed with a list of items needed in an emergency so that families will be more prepared in the time of need.  Many items needed to evacuate are already around the house and will hopefully "live" in the bags.  A quick look at the list on the bag will remind families of what other items should be gathered and taken along.

Our thanks to CN Railroad and Volunteer Mid-South for the opportunity to gain work experience while helping others in the process.
